What kind of snake is this? Description below.?
Black snake about 18″ long with small yellow/gold spots along both sides – maybe a light colored tail – yellow spots underneath head area I think – not sure if viper, but possibly opened mouth and then fled. This is in Tuscaloosa Alabama I live in woods with yard as a clearing – it was in the yard and fled to the woods. When we have water – there is a swamp down an embankment below my house.

It’s not venemous, and many water snakes will open their mouths to scare off predators.

They’re not venemous either and will keep down the population of other snakes (including venemous ones) near your house, because they eat other snakes.
Check out the other photos on that website if it didn’t look like one of those, and thanks for not killing it, it was almost definitely non-venemous if it was black; the only venemous snakes in AL are brown or gray and noticeably patterned.
